News Feeds
  • Hi everyone. Just curious if anybody has news feeds for your radio station? Is there a website or service you know about that might provide hourly radio news feeds I can schedule with my broadcasting software? (I decided to purchase StationPlaylist Studio which I really like.) Thanks for you thoughts, ideas and suggestions.

    Fox News
    NPR News
    CBS News

I know Sam offers a PAL script that pulls the feed from the URL for top of the hour newscasts. I believe it's $20 a month or something along those lines. StationPlaylist might have the same type of thing too.

Be extremely careful if you rebroadcast news feeds from networks. Read the podcast terms of service carefully. Most do not allow retransmission of their podcasts.

FSN has revamped their delivery, might want to check them out. For $15 a month, they have a pretty good hourly news update.

  • Thanks I will check this out.
  • Question for reaper...are these podcasts from fox, npr and cbs allowed to be rebroadcasted? I tried looking through terms of service, etc. and can't find anything on any of the sites that talks about this.

At the bottom of http://www.foxnews.com/podcasts/ it says this:

"This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed"

I know that CBS has a deal through SpacialAudio/SAM Broadcaster that offers CBS News, as Reaper said, for around $20 a month, and I WISH that STATION PLAYLIST had that...I would jump right on that. The CBS News offering is the one and only reason I would even consider SAM over SPL at this point (I'm testing both right now).

I read through NPR terms of use, and they are quite complex. I think the best way to approach NPR is to write them and ask permission -- they have an e-mail address that can be used for permissions.

http://www.npr.org/about/permissioninfo.html (Please notice this about 1/3 of the way down the page under "You Do Not Need Permission For...")

All other uses, including reprinting, republishing, broadcast and any further distribution, require written permission from NPR.

Personally, I would love if LoudCaster would make a deal with a company such as CBS or AP News for a monthly fee based service for their broadcasters. Or at least ask some of them and see if they are interested. It seems like if CBS is open to internet distribution, and FSN models their whole concept around it, maybe some other media services would be open to the suggestion.

(By the way, I have used FSN before, and I do recommend them. Other international news organizations use FSN actualities in their newscasts, they have a well respected staff of reporters, and they are VERY easy to deal with and friendly too.)

Also, WRN (World Radio Network) has an address for inquiries for rebroadcasting their material (http://www.wrnbroadcast.com/corporate/re-broadcasting) but I haven't actually written them for information, and I don't know of anyone else who has. Might be an avenue for those stations that like international affairs programming, etc.

    Just throwing those out there.

    Just a quick postscript:

There are stations out there in the interwebs that just link to various news podcasts on the hour and just play the news anyway. This is not a good idea.

News organizations do not look too kindly upon copyright infringement, which is what rebroadcasting without permission would amount to.

I don't know any LoudCaster stations that do this, but I have heard it done on various ShoutCast stations. Again, just bringing it up since there are probably plenty of other broadcasters who wonder about availability of news programming (of which I am one...:) ) and might stumble upon this discussion.

For CNN, by the way, just for the record as well:

    http://www.cnn.com/services/podcasting/

    The following:

"You must use the Podcast Content as provided by CNN, and you may not edit or modify the Podcast Content or links supplied by CNN. You may not redistribute the Podcast Content. Any use, display or performance of the Podcast Content must not suggest that CNN promotes or endorses any third party causes, ideas, websites, products or services. To request permission for a particular use not permitted by these Terms of Use, please send your request to licensing.agent@turner.com. "

I know CBS and NPR will allow rebroadcasts. Be sure to CYA (Cover Your Ass) before airing any news broadcasts. As Tim stated, several stations rebroadcast news feeds without permission all the time, and there are several stations who stream from their websites illegally among other things. That doesn't make it right it's just the way it is. Enforcement is very lax at this time for internet radio. I believe there are just too many stations to keep track of.

    Hey Staff

what are the news feeds all about on here
  • reaperreaper January 25
Live broadcasters who wish to run news segments on their station. Most like to run news at the top of every hour.
  • Thanks for all of your research and ideas guys. I am surprised that there are not more news feeds available via the internet for web radio. You'd think somebody could make a bit of money providing a service like this. Since I don't want a ton of news, but just a couple minutes at the top of the hour, it would be cool to have options like FSN for 1 minute, 2 minutes, and so on. Been thinking...another approach I am considering if it is legal is to just getting news that I can read the copy over the air from, So with that in mind...what do you guys know about accessing the written news from various news agencies to read over the air? Can I quote as long as I give credit to the source? Finally, I want to keep my station all legal and above board. Anyone know anything about this option? The third option is to hire staff to travel the world and get the news to report for me. LOL.

Cnet would be cool to broadcast their tech stuff over my station as Listeners could learn about different Smartphones that can do things like Internet Radio and their reviews but then again this could be considered as "advertising" and that too opens another door for breaking rules.

With the news , It would be a great option if the DJ BOT had a place where you could drop the news file and it would play on top of the hour

  • sammy7545sammy7545 February 12
    i also see xml
  • sammy7545sammy7545 February 12
ok thru further investigation rollingstone wants u to subscribe to their magazine for access to those rss feeds
  • thelegacythelegacy February 14
Hmmm I remember when Rolling Stone was more dedicated to Classic Rock and Progressive Rock. But now they have stuff like Britney Spears and that would not be cool for my station if some of those news feeds were to come up. However I don't know if "The Source" or anything like that still exist anymore. Westwood Radio Network use to have Flashback and Today In Rock N Roll History. Those would be a nice touch for my station. I also don't know too much about RSS feeds as I've never messed with them.
  • kentskryptkentskrypt February 14
I think those two shows still exist, however I don't know if the big syndies (WW1, Premiere, etc.) will deal with the web only broadcasters
  • thelegacythelegacy February 22
Ahhh that is really too bad but probably not since we'd be considered competition. Nice thought though. If it were the case it would make The Legacy stand out since we're on iTunes and I've not heard those shows in most areas since 1983 when WILS 101 FM in Lansing, Mich was Progressive Rock. However the stations in Va Beach are a little closer than where I use to live being "True classic rock" stations.
