Broadcasting with Nicecast
  • kevin_prrkevin_prr January 3
First, is there a good series of Nicecast tutorials anyone has come across?

Has anyone tweaked the compression settings in the Nicecast plugin? I'm not exactly sure and I was looking for suggestions to improve voices.

Also, I want to broadcast live with the program and have been testing with it set to run from application iTunes. I won't receive any sound until I hit play on itunes, so I am guessing I just have to get on the ball and have instrumental beds ready so I can talk up the songs?

    Thank you,
    Kevin

Kevin, I have not found a good tutorial for Nicecast, so I've just winged it for a few years. I use the iTunes choice, but I know you can use stuff from your files instead.
I just never figured out how to talk on it so far. :)

Thank you Trip. I'll keep looking through YouTube to get a handle on Compression settings and see if I can apply to the Nicecast plugin. I'll pass along anything I find.

I'll just place the beds in the playlist at the right spots and work on the hand/eye, I mean hand/voice coordination -- ;-)

There really isn't a good tutorial that I've found as well. Since I don't have a mac media keyboard, I use the sizzlingkeys (http://yellowmug.com/sk4it/) application to help control itunes. It enables global keyboard shortcuts, to allow for pausing the current track without itunes focused. Then I can use the effects panel and click start in the voice over plugin. Still takes a bit of concentration to not screw up.. hah, but I guess nothing is perfect.

When I was doing the FREE software to broadcast I tried something similar to Nicecast. What you have to do to talk is go into your soundcard settings and press playback and check the microphone. Now when you talk your voice goes through your speakers. Nicecast uses the "Stereo Mix" trick meaning anything going to your speakers is broadcasted over the air. If my mind serves me well you'lol either have to have a mic with a switch or keep clicking on and off the Mic in Playback. Hope this helps.

    Thank you for the suggestions.

Nicecast is a audio hijacker. You basically tell it what application to hijack the audio from. I wouldn't suggest using Itunes to automate your station 24/7. It is good if you want to use it to do some live shows. There is a automation program for mac called radiologik.
Here is the link to it: http://macinmind.com/?area=app&app=radiologik&pg=info
It is very good. The free version doesn't have any limitations. The only thing is every 45 minutes a thing pops saying you have to wait 30 seconds and then you click continue. This doesn't affect the audio playback. If you want to use this software and need help setting it up I can help you.

Thank you so much NounosSon. This program looks great. I'll look in to it further and I'm sure I'll take you up on your offer.

I have also been using Radiologik for a very long time on the Mac as well as StationPlaylist for windows, so along with NounosSon, if you need any help, just give us a holler :)

Thanks Jack. In most cases we will run pre-recorded shows, so we will get a lot of use out of Loudcaster's scheduler, which we've tested and works very well for us. I was trying to solve our mixing need with a software program because we really want to host live shows. But I think it will be more to my benefit to get a hardware mixer console. If you have any thoughts/suggestions on the items below I would really appreciate them. Thank you.

We will need a mixer for two mics
    Computer of course using iTunes
I would also want to connect a second music source, probably ipod to bring up instrumentals we use during our talking segments
And I'll want to connect the iPhone for calls in to the program

We'll pump it thru Nicecast, I like their archiving feature and I get a lot of use out of Audio HiJack as well.

    Are the mics USB?
Also the computer for using iTunes, is that a separate computer?
  • kevin_prrkevin_prr January 12
I have 2 XLR mics and a Blue Yeti Pro that can be USB or XLR. Just one iMac in the setup I listed.
  • kevin_prrkevin_prr January 12
I should also clear up that I need a mixer. Any recommendations?
  • JacksharpJacksharp January 13
Behringer makes some very good mixers. I personally use a broadcast board, for the main program, but also own a couple of inexpensive Behringers I use for production. Bought them on Amazon. They have a pretty good selection. Just search for "mixer"

Wow! Not sure what happened with the post. I only hit the post comment button once :)

That double posting has happened to me a few times. Thank you for recommendation. My first criteria is Easy!
