How to make money from your station?
  • NounosSonNounosSon July 2011
I found this cool service called Radio Loyalty(http://radioloyalty.com/). You can make money from your station by having your listeners listen in there player. You listeners can also earn points and and redeem them for prizes. Is this legal?
  • reaperreaper July 2011
It would be in violation of Lodcaster's policy which states:
Royalties attributable to music copyrights are included because Loudcaster pays them. However, the use of copyrighted music doesn't extend past Loudcaster.com. The current US Copyright law, and statutory music licenses maintained by ASCAP, BMI, SESAC and SoundExchange require that you manage and pay for the royalties if you embed and or re-brand the streams outside of Loudcaster.com.
  • thelegacythelegacy July 2011
Too bad it may not be legal. They even talk about buying slots or something. Maybe somehow in the future Loudcaster will have a system similar to that.
  • network59network59 July 2011
Am I allowed to make money by selling commercial slots or anything for that matter for my station?
  • reaperreaper July 2011
No, but you can sell ad space on your website.
  • thelegacythelegacy July 2011
Hmmm now that is an idea Leo how does this work? If people only use your website to click a listen now link to Loudcaster? I hope in Loudcaster 2 they'll allow for ads to be sold and maybe google adsence where it would help partner revenue for you and Loudcaster. There is some potential here.
  • NounosSonNounosSon July 2011
If you have a Amazon Associates account you can link it to your Loudcaster station and have ads display on your Loudcaster station page.
  • reaperreaper July 2011
Not your Loudcaster page, but your stations website. Sorry for the confusion.
  • KeollKeoll July 2011
Advertisement remedies were being toyed with early on in Loudcaster's existence with the idea being shared revenue...We had Amazon links for a while.......I'm not sure the logistics involved but I'm sure there's still some planning on this front.

network59 - Obtaining a direct license with SESAC was the solution for people using Loudcity....Send an e-mail to support to see if that can be done here.....SESAC licenses were about $200 last I knew.
  • thelegacythelegacy July 2011
If you could pay per month it would equal $17/mo but I doubt you can pay per month. If so let me know. If they will allow for HTML code pasting in Loudcaster 2 it could be done on the stations launch page and you could make some $$ from it. I was thinking about this because Obama may be taking away SSDI if the US debt isn't delt with. If this happens I"d have to figure out how I could get my station to rake in $1,800/Mo in revenue to keep me and my fiancee alive. I hope this does not happen for I bet I'd have to go more Classic hits/pop in order to rake in 100+ listeners 24/7 unless I could charge astronomical rates for the ads. Lets just hope it doesn't come to that.
  • reaperreaper July 2011
SESAC = 2 semi annual payments of $209.00=$418.00 minimum per year or 5.3% of gross revenues.
BMI = $320.00 minimum per year or 1.75% of gross revenues.
ASCAP = $288.00 minimum per year or 2.76% of gross revenues.
SoundExchange = $500.00 minimum per year based on 159,140 aggregated tuning hours per channel or station monthly.

Then add your streaming host, which can be cheap as long has you provide the licensing. Some are $20.00 per month for 100 listener slots at 128k.

These licenses fees are minimum. They are based on your website or station's gross revenue. SoundExchange requires a monthly report and the other 3 require quarterly reports.

Loudcity may have had a special agreement with SESAC but to stream directly from your website you would still need the other licenses.

SoundExchange licensing would be needed for each channel or station, but the BMI/SESAC/ASCAP licensing would cover the URL of the website you use and can cover multiple stations as long as they launch from the appropriate URL.

Shoot by the time I get the license I probably would not make much money. I wonder how Radionomy does it? Its suppose to be legal and your station can make $$ if you get enough listeners. Only thing is its in Beta and comes from France. It says they pay all royalties. They have where you can use SAM or you use their Radio management tool to Upload songs and program the playlists from their DJ Bot (that part don't sound that much fun) and when I tried their Radio management tool it need Mssql and it would not run. Their live deal won't give the IP address like its suppose to do but I was told about it from a friend.

I'm sure Loudcaster 2 may have something like this too I have a feeling.
  • reaperreaper August 2011
Radionomy is based in Belgium. They are governed by SABAM and their licensing requirements are very basic. I would not hesitate using their service, but would not stream live. Your stream would still need to be licensed by SoundExchange due to the fact that the stream still originates in the US. But, their basic stream originates from Europe and would be their responsibility to cover whatever royalties that may incur.
  • kentskryptkentskrypt August 2011
so (dumb newbie question here) does that mean no syndication programming, even if it is straight barter?
  • NounosSonNounosSon August 2011
I have used Radionomy before. It is really good and simple. They supply you with everything. The stream, jingles, and even the music. There radio manager software is nice and very advance. You can make clocks, playlists, schedule events and more.
  • thelegacythelegacy August 2011
But when I tried their management tool it kept saying mssql won't start and I can't get to square one. I have a website where I can embed the player and everything. I'd love to try this as a side project and still keep the one I have here.

I watched the youtube video so if you have a legal freeware copy of the software that works with win 7 please shoot it to me.
  • JackJack August 2011
I tried installing it 3 times, too. Like you I never got to square one. The forums seemed to point me in the direction of .net and mysql, both of which are up-to-date and working with other applications. Then my astrologer told me that Mercury is retrograde, so I stopped trying.

It sounds exciting. Since I continue to be unable to stay connected with Loudcaster, I would like a dj bot with a little more control, such as RM. After Mercury goes direct I may fire up one of my spare computer and attempt to install RadioManager there. I wish software engineers would write programs that are not so dependent upon combinations of other software.

    Bonk
Something funky happened. Please bear with us while we iron out the kinks.
  • thelegacythelegacy August 2011
Yea I think they could simply allow FTP and a java script web application. Filezilla works wonders I never had problems with Uploading to Loudcaster. Again this would be a side project since I can't legally broadcast live there being outside of that country which is bonk and this is why many folks should use Loudcaster as their main station. But a little extra cash never hurts anyone.
  • NounosSonNounosSon August 2011
That is weird. When I installed the RadioManager everything installed fine. I have it running on a hp d530 sff P4 intel 2.6GHz 2gb of ram win xp pro service pack 3.

Try uninstalling it and then reinstall. Maybe I could make a video on how I installed it.
  • thelegacythelegacy August 2011
I'll try installing in XP mode then. If that don't work I'll try and run a virtual copy of Windows XP.
  • JackJack August 2011
The message I got was "error 1001". But then Mercury is retrograde and I can't even post to this forum without seeing "Bonk Something funky happened. Please bear with us while we iron out the kinks."
  • thelegacythelegacy August 2011
I keep seeing that too. I've seen it on both my computer and my droid. I guess I was too lazy to write another support ticket.
  • JackJack August 2011
I wasn't too lazy, I just assumed that since I was told that there is a kink, someone was already busy ironing it.
  • JackJack August 2011
    NounosSon:

I was able to install the Radionomy RadioManager you talked about above on a spare computer and spent about 40 hours creating graphics, selecting tracks, and designing a sound-hour for various times of the day.

After I got it all done and on-the-air, I received an email telling me that if I don't average 130 listener hours per day that I will have to pay for the royalties myself.

WOW, I'll never make it so I may as well cancel it now. I wish they had sent the email before I invested so much set-up time.

On the other hand, the Radio Manager is amazing. You can choose your own graphics for your tracks, ID's, etc. You can use a slide bar to adjust your fade in and out time for each ID and Track. You can add tracks from their library or upload your own. The web page is beautiful. After generating a playlist you can manually edit it. Oh, well, I am sooo disappointed. I hope LoudCaster is looking closely at their Radio Manager and Web Pages. They have some amazing features. Some of the features would not be legal to use in this country.

No doubt I could have features like that if I had available software to broadcast live, but I have never been able to stay connected to LC for more that a minute or two.
  • songbookdjsongbookdj August 2011
Yes that is a fair summary. I couldn't resist setting up a station too as its free you don't have anything really to lose apart from the time invested. The software is really good, I didn't have any issues installing the Radio Manager though it did hang for an age when I first loaded it. Anyway the features are excellent for playlists, clocks etc I hope Loudcaster has something like this in the works.

It appears to be funded by ads they are supposed to insert them in your stream aka Live365 though I haven't come across any on my station yet. The main drawback is you have to average 130 hours a day I think 9 months after you start if not they deactivate the station unless you pay the royalties (you need 12 hours a day three months in).

I'm not convinced this is particularly easy to achieve under the set up they have possibly it depends on your genre, I noticed for instance some genres like classical and jazz weren't even immediately visible on the menu, its also I wouldn't be surprised a Live365 like situation where the big stations get bigger the smaller stations tend to struggle. One of the great things about Loudcaster is the exposure your station gets on shoutcast and TuneIn.

I had some issues with their flash player it seems to work intermittently on my system still there are other options. The site is geared to a French/Belgian audience so I don't know if that would affect English language stations.
  • thelegacythelegacy August 2011
Remember your Radionomy station is also listed in Shoutcast from what I remember reading. It won't install on my Win7 system don't know why. I finally gave up and decided to dedicate most of my time to my station.

  • richgrichg November 2011
Does anyone know if we can put announcements (promos may be a better word) on our Loudcaster station that asks for "listener support" by going to our main station website?
  • triptrip November 2011
Heck yeah, that's about the only way we can get anything. Just make a promo saying to donate by going to your website.
  • The general rule for Loudcaster is: Airtime = $ is bad

From that I have read on these forums before, we cannot put out our hand for money in any fashion using our Audio Stream or the Loudcaster Page the stream lives on. We can ask for money all we want on our website but that is because, legally speaking, our websites are a separate critter from our websites.

You best bet is fill your website with dynamic content that give the listeners a reason to traffic your site. For example, I have a blog that updates a least once at http://paragonbroadcasting.com/ that I put a neat music Video or song on. I also have the forum where people can post and talk to my DJs.

    Examples:
Bad = "You are listening to the Paragon Broadcasting Service. Help use keep the music playing by donating at ParagonBroadcasting.com"

Okay = "You are listening to Paragon Broadcasting Service. Find out schedules, talk with our DJs and see neat stuff on our blog at ParagonBroadcast, com"

You MIGHT be able to get away with saying you are a listener supported station as the support you are getting from your listeners could be seen as them just being a listener and not money. You MIGHT even be able to thank them by name on the air (not not mention they gave money). I would, for the last one at the very least, wait for clarification by a member of the Loudcaster team before doing that.

Howdy, Stranger!
